Sustainable Compassion and Wisdom Training (SCT) teaches us how to become newly receptive to compassionate, healing qualities in the depth of our being, to settle and relax into that depth, and to come from there in responding to others with more replenishing and expansive care, compassion and awareness.

Developed by John Makransky, SCT is adapted from Tibetan Buddhism into a form that is immediately accessible to people of all backgrounds, traditions, and world views. SCT has three modes of practice:

1) The receptive mode teaches meditations that help us find access to hidden qualities of love, compassion, inner peace, and wisdom.  -

2) The deep self-compassion mode teaches meditations that help us settle into the source of those qualities in the depth of our awareness. This is a process of deepening relaxation, inner acceptance and spaciousness that is profoundly healing and empowering in mind and body.  -

3) The extending mode teaches meditations that help us come from that depth to connect with others in their deep dignity and humanity, with more sustaining and expansive powers of care, compassion and wisdom in action.

John Makransky, PhD, is Associate Professor of Buddhism and Comparative Theology at Boston College, senior advisor for Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche’s Centre of Buddhist Studies at Rangjung Yeshe Institute in Nepal, former president of the Society of Buddhist-Christian studies, and co-founder of the Foundation for Active Compassion and Courage of Care Coalition.

In 2000, John was ordained as a Lama in the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism--a teacher of innate compassion and wisdom practices.  For the past eleven years, in consultation with his Tibetan teachers, John has been teaching meditations of innate love and wisdom that he adapted from Tibetan Buddhism for modern Buddhists, people of other spiritual traditions, and for those in caring roles and professions. For this, John developed the Sustainable Compassion Training model (SCT), which is being applied to empower a more replenishing and unconditional power of care and compassion, beyond “compassion fatigue,” for teachers, healthcare providers, social workers, therapists and activists.
